Lettuce Grow Together

The Planning Department regularly reviews landscape plans for new developments.  Proposed landscaping is typically a mix of lawn grass, trees, bushes, and flowers.  However, earlier this month, I was treated to a different type of landscaping for an existing Troy office building.

“It was very rewarding to see what we could accomplish with a relatively small budget and a few dedicated people.  Our garden is a great success and our entire company has the potential to enjoy the fruits (well….vegetables) of that success.” – Tom Finch

In the spring of 2017, Asset Health’s 6-member employee Garden Team began designing and installing raised bed vegetable gardens at their Butterfield Road headquarters.  The company paid for materials, soil, plants, and tools.  The employees handled design, construction, and maintenance.

The organic gardens (no chemicals whatsoever) contain many vegetables including tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, spinach, lettuce, chard, and parsley. By design, the garden is rodent-proof, and the lawn sprinklers provide ample water. Gardeners often stroll the office halls sharing fresh produce – it is a great way to foster teamwork, communication, and encourage healthy snacking. We’ve also used some of the herbs from the garden for infused water stations. The garden has had a very positive impact on company culture.

“The garden has been a wonderful addition to the grounds here at Asset Health. Not only is it providing our team members with fresh vegetables and herbs that they can share with their families, but it creates an opportunity to reconnect with nature during the workday. Some days can be very busy and tending to the garden - even if only for a few minutes – has been a great way for me to clear my mind and return to work feeling refreshed.” – Niccole LaDue
